The Student Arborist Internship by Davey Tree Expert Company is a paid, full-time opportunity, ideal for students passionate about arboriculture. The role pays $25 per hour and requires a weekly commitment of 40-50 hours. This internship is open to those studying Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, and related fields, making it attractive to anyone looking to build a strong foundation in environmental work. While a commercial driver’s license isn’t mandatory, having one is a major bonus.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Interns are guided by experienced managers while exploring tree climbing, chainsaw use, plant health care, and customer service tasks. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work. You’ll work on residential and commercial properties, plus spend some time in the office, giving you diverse insight into the industry.
You’ll also be responsible for maintaining professionalism, wearing provided gear and PPE, and completing a development program aimed at preparing you for long-term career growth. Strong collaboration and communication skills are necessary to support the team environment and ensure projects go smoothly.
What Makes This Internship Stand Out
One top advantage of this internship is practical, hands-on learning under industry leaders. Interns gain real-world skills that go beyond classroom theory. Davey Tree is well-known for providing excellent, structured training, setting you up for long-term career success.
Another significant benefit is the fully-provided gear—including climbing equipment and uniforms—plus opportunities for advancement and scholarships, making it accessible and rewarding for students genuinely interested in arboriculture and environmental stewardship.
Potential Downsides
This is a physically demanding job that requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions. If you prefer desk work, this may not be the right fit. The internship schedule can also require occasional weekend hours, which may impact personal time if you need traditional weekends off.

If you’re seeking a dynamic, hands-on internship with strong mentorship, impressive employee benefits, and excellent learning opportunities, this role offers a solid step into a professional arborist career. It’s well-suited for ambitious students ready for real responsibility and growth.
